Bring your overseas fiancé(e) to Australia to marry. The Subclass 300 is Australia’s fiancé visa — allowing your partner to enter Australia, marry you, then apply for permanent residency through the Partner Visa pathway.
The Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300) — also known as the fiancé visa — is designed for engaged couples where one partner is an overseas national. It allows the overseas partner to travel to Australia, marry their Australian fiancé(e), and then apply for the Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) to remain in Australia permanently.
The Subclass 300 is a temporary visa valid for 9 months from the date of grant. During this period the visa holder must enter Australia and marry their sponsor. After marriage, they must apply for the onshore Partner Visa (820) before the 300 expires. Failing to marry or apply before expiry will require departing Australia.
Key requirement: You must be outside Australia when you apply for the Subclass 300 and outside Australia when the visa is granted. The application cannot be lodged or decided while the applicant is in Australia.
Confirm both partners meet the eligibility requirements — age (18+), genuine relationship with in-person meeting, and the sponsor’s Australian status. Our migration agents can provide a free eligibility assessment.
The Australian sponsor must be approved by the Department of Home Affairs. This involves the sponsor lodging a sponsorship application, demonstrating their status as a citizen or permanent resident and their character.
Collect proof of your relationship (photos, correspondence, travel together), identity documents, police clearances from all countries lived in, medical examination results, and evidence of meeting in person.
Submit your Subclass 300 application online via ImmiAccount. The applicant must be outside Australia at the time of lodgement. Processing takes approximately 11 months.
Once granted, enter Australia before the initial arrival date. You must then marry your sponsor within the 9-month visa validity period. The marriage must be legally performed and registered in Australia.
After marrying, apply for the Partner Visa Subclass 820 (onshore) before your Subclass 300 expires. This begins the pathway to the permanent Partner Visa (801) after 2 years.
Travel to Australia specifically to marry your fiancé(e) and begin your life together in Australia.
While on the Subclass 300 you may work and study in Australia, allowing you to settle in before marriage.
Travel in and out of Australia multiple times during the validity period, so you can travel if needed before marrying.
After marrying, apply for the Partner Visa (820 then 801) for permanent residency — and eventually Australian citizenship.
Dependent children can be included in the Subclass 300 application, allowing the whole family to travel together.
Unlike some visa types, an Australian sponsor can apply for a prospective marriage visa sponsorship in genuine cases regardless of prior relationships.
Health insurance: The Subclass 300 does not provide Medicare access. You are advised to obtain adequate private health insurance to cover medical treatment during your stay in Australia before you apply for the Partner Visa 820.
The Subclass 300 is the first step in a clear pathway to permanent residency in Australia for engaged couples. After marrying in Australia on the 300, you transition to the Partner Visa stream.
Processing times vary based on application completeness, health and character check times, and application volume. As of September 2023, the indicative times are:
Processing can be faster or slower depending on individual circumstances. A complete, well-prepared application with all supporting documents reduces the risk of delays or requests for additional information (s56 requests).
The Subclass 300 government fee is paid at the time of lodgement:
Additional costs apply for health examinations, police clearance certificates, biometrics, and the subsequent Partner Visa (820/801) application. Our OMARA-registered migration agents in Perth can provide a full cost estimate for your entire pathway.
