Overview

What is the Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 884?

The Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 884 is a temporary visa that allows parents of pension age to live in Australia for up to 2 years, while their children are Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens settled in Australia.

The 884 is the temporary stage of the contributory aged parent pathway — it allows parents to arrive in Australia sooner and split the cost of the expensive contributory fee. After 2 years on the 884, applicants transition to the permanent Subclass 864.

It is the aged-parent equivalent of the Subclass 173 (which is for non-aged parents). Like the 173, the 884 cannot be renewed — holders must apply for the 864 before it expires.

Two-Stage Pathway: Lodge the 884 first → live in Australia for 2 years with Medicare access → then transition to the permanent Subclass 864. The second instalment for the 884 ($29,130) is lower than the 864 ($43,600), and former 884 holders pay a reduced second instalment when granted the 864.

Eligibility

Subclass 884 Requirements

The 884 requirements mirror those of the 864 — it is the same visa, just the temporary stage:

For the Applicant (Parent)

  • Must be of pension age (currently 67 years from 1 July 2023)
  • Must pass the balance-of-family test
  • Must meet Australian health requirements
  • Must meet character requirements
  • Must have no outstanding debt to the Australian government
  • Must have an Assurance of Support (financial guarantee)

For the Sponsor (Child)

  • Must be 18 years or older. If the child is under 18, sponsorship can come from: the child’s spouse (18+), a close relative/guardian, or a community organisation
  • Must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • Must have resided in Australia for a minimum of 2 years
  • Must meet health and character requirements
  • Must commit to providing accommodation and financial support for the first 2 years

Pension Age Requirement

Until 1 Jul 2021:
66 years
1 Jul 2021–2023:
66 years 6 months
From 1 Jul 2023:
67 years (current requirement)

What is the Balance-of-Family Test?

Satisfied if: (a) at least half of your children are Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible NZ citizens living in Australia, OR (b) more of your children live in Australia than in any other single country.

What is an Assurance of Support?

An Assurance of Support is a legally binding commitment by a sponsor to provide financial support so the visa holder does not rely on government welfare. Up to three people can jointly provide this assurance. The assurer must demonstrate sufficient financial capacity to support the applicant.

Benefits

Benefits of the Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 884

Permanent Residency

Secure permanent residence in Australia and live alongside your children and grandchildren indefinitely.

Work & Study Rights

Enjoy full rights to work and study anywhere in Australia without restrictions.

Multiple Entry Travel

Travel freely in and out of Australia for 5 years from the visa grant date. After 5 years, a Resident Return Visa (RRV) or Australian citizenship is required to re-enter.

Sponsor Relatives

Once granted, the 864 allows holders to sponsor other relatives for permanent residency in Australia — expanding the family reunion opportunity beyond just the immediate parent.

Medicare Access

Once the 804 visa is granted, enrol in Medicare — Australia’s universal health insurance scheme. Note: not available while application is pending on this visa.

Pathway to Citizenship

After meeting the residence requirements as a permanent resident, apply for Australian citizenship and become a fully settled Australian.

Medicare access from grant: Unlike the non-contributory parent visas (103, 804), holders of the 884 receive Medicare access immediately on grant — so parents can access Australian public healthcare during their 2-year stay.

Processing Time

Contributory Aged Parent Visa 884 Processing Time

The Subclass 884 is subject to the same capping system as the 864. As at 30 September 2023, the contributory parent visa queue was at May 2017 — meaning new applications face an expected wait of approximately 12 years. However, once granted, the 884 allows the parent to live in Australia immediately for 2 years while awaiting the permanent 864.

Frequently Asked Questions

In case you don’t find an answer, feel free to consult with one of our agents.

What is the Contributory Aged Parent Visa 884 and 864?
The Subclass 884 is a temporary visa (2 years) for pension-age parents to live in Australia. It is the stepping stone to the permanent Subclass 864. Applying for the 884 first allows parents to arrive in Australia sooner and split the total cost — the second instalment for the 884 ($29,130) is lower than the 864 ($43,600), and former 884 holders pay a reduced amount when transitioning to the 864.
What is the difference between the 173 and 884 visa?
Both the 173 and 884 are temporary contributory visas, but the 884 is specifically for parents who have reached pension age (67+ from July 2023). The 173 is available to parents of any age and can only be applied for offshore. The 884 can be lodged onshore or offshore.
What is the difference between the 804 and 884?
Both require pension age and the balance of family test. The key differences: the 884 is a temporary visa (2 years) with a much higher contributory fee ($5,040 + $29,130 ≈ $34,170 total) but significantly better processing time (~12 years) than the 804 (30 years). The 804 is permanent with lower fees ($5,280 + $2,065) but extremely long processing. The 884 also grants Medicare immediately on grant.
Can I apply for the 884 from inside Australia?
Yes. The 884 can be lodged both onshore (inside Australia) and offshore (outside Australia). This differs from the 173, which is offshore only. However, you must not have a “No Further Stay” condition on your current visa if applying onshore.
Does the 884 give access to Medicare?
Yes. Unlike the non-contributory parent visas (103 and 804), holders of the Subclass 884 receive Medicare access immediately on grant — so parents can access Australian public healthcare throughout their 2-year temporary stay.
How much does the 884 visa cost?
First instalment: AUD $5,040 for the main applicant (paid at lodgement), $2,515 for additional applicants 18+, $1,260 for under 18. Second instalment (contributory): AUD $29,130 per applicant 18+, $2,095 for dependent children under 18. Total for main applicant: approximately AUD $34,170.
What happens after 2 years on the 884?
After 2 years on the 884, holders must apply for the permanent Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 864. The 884 cannot be renewed. Former 884 holders pay a reduced second instalment when transitioning to the 864, making the two-stage approach cost-effective overall.
What is an Assurance of Support for the 884?
An Assurance of Support is a legally binding commitment by one or more sponsors to ensure the visa holder does not rely on government welfare. This is required for the 884. The assurer must demonstrate sufficient financial capacity. This is the same requirement as the 804 and 864.
