Graduate Visa 485 Updates: Extended Duration and Changes to Requirements

Introduction:

Are you an international student in Australia planning to apply for the Graduate Visa 485? Stay up-to-date with the recent updates and crucial changes to this temporary visa. Find out how these revisions affect the duration and eligibility requirements, potentially impacting your pathway to permanent residency.

The Graduate Visa 485 Explained:

The Graduate Visa 485 offers international students who have completed their studies in Australia an excellent opportunity to stay in the country for 18 to 48 months with full work rights. This visa can strategically pave the way to obtaining permanent residency in the future, making it a sought-after option among graduates.

Recent Changes to the Graduate Visa 485:

As of 1st July 2023, there are significant updates to the Graduate Visa 485 that all applicants must be aware of. Previously, international students completing a 2-year Diploma or Trade Certificate at a VET college could apply for a 2-year Graduate Visa 485 under the Graduate Work Stream, regardless of their occupation’s presence on the MLTSSL.

However, from 1st July 2023 onwards, applicants under the Graduate Work Stream will need to:

Nominate a Skilled occupation listed on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

Provide a positive skills assessment relevant to their nominated occupation.

Have a closely related course from their studies in Australia, as not all courses will be eligible.

Graduate Visa 485 Benefits for Higher Education Graduates:

Graduates under the Post Study Work Rights Stream with Higher Education qualifications also experience changes. The Australian government has introduced an extended post-study work rights policy for graduates in areas facing skill shortages. Here are the updated extensions:

Bachelor degree graduates can now apply for a four-year extension (previously two years).

Master’s degree graduates can apply for a five-year extension (previously three years).

PhD graduates can apply for a six-year extension (previously four years).

Note: These extensions add to the extra one to two years of work rights announced in 2022 for applicants in regional areas.

Eligibility for the Extended Duration:

To be eligible for the extended post-study work rights, graduates must meet the following criteria:

Hold a Temporary Graduate visa (Post-Study Work stream) on or after 1st July 2023.

Have lodged an application for the Graduate Visa 485 on or after 1st July 2023.

Their qualification must be listed among the eligible qualifications released by the Department of Education on 1st July 2023.
