The Aged Parent Visa Subclass 804 is a permanent residency visa for parents of pension age whose children are settled in Australia. It is the non-contributory aged parent visa — lower fees but a lengthy cap and queue processing time.
The Aged Parent Visa Subclass 804 is a permanent residency visa for parents of pension age whose children are Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens settled in Australia.
It is the non-contributory aged parent visa — with lower fees than the Subclass 864 — but like the 103, it operates on a cap and queue system with very lengthy processing times. A key advantage over the Subclass 103 is that applicants who lodge the 804 while in Australia are granted a Bridging Visa, allowing them to remain in Australia while their application is processed.
An Assurance of Support is required for the 804 — a financial guarantee from a sponsor that the applicant will not depend on government welfare. This distinguishes it from the Subclass 103.
Processing time warning: As at 30 September 2023, the 804 queue was up to December 2012 — approximately 30 years wait. For faster processing, consider the Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 864, which costs more but processes significantly faster.
The 804 has specific requirements for the applicant (aged parent) and the sponsor (child):
Satisfied if: (a) at least half of your children are Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible NZ citizens living in Australia, OR (b) more of your children live in Australia than in any other single country.
An Assurance of Support is a legally binding commitment by a sponsor to provide financial support so the visa holder does not rely on government welfare. Up to three people can jointly provide this assurance. The assurer must demonstrate sufficient financial capacity to support the applicant.
Secure permanent residence in Australia and live alongside your children and grandchildren indefinitely.
Enjoy full rights to work and study anywhere in Australia without restrictions.
Travel freely in and out of Australia for 5 years from the visa grant date. After 5 years, a Resident Return Visa (RRV) or Australian citizenship is required to re-enter.
Eligible family members (e.g., dependent partner) can lodge their applications alongside the primary applicant. The visa also allows you to sponsor your own family members to Australia once granted.
Once the 804 visa is granted, enrol in Medicare — Australia’s universal health insurance scheme. Note: not available while application is pending on this visa.
After meeting the residence requirements as a permanent resident, apply for Australian citizenship and become a fully settled Australian.
Bridging Visa advantage: Unlike the non-contributory Subclass 103, applicants who lodge the 804 while inside Australia are granted a Bridging Visa — allowing them to remain lawfully in Australia throughout the lengthy processing period.
The Subclass 804 is subject to the same cap and queue system as the 103. As at 30 September 2023, the queue was at December 2012 — meaning new applications face an expected wait of approximately 30 years. Applicants holding a Bridging Visa can remain in Australia throughout this period.
